John M. Elkins was a pioneer to Parker County in the 1850's. He was a natural leader and his father made sure he received a good education. He was so well trusted as a leader that when he was elected as the 1st Sheriff of Coleman County, Texas, only one person voted against him.

This original book was published by Greer Press, Beaumont, TX and  believed only a few copies of the book was published. One copy was passed down to Don M. Jay and our reprint is from this priceless original.

There are many accounts of Indian fights, massacres, scalping, murders, Buffalo hunts, and capture of cattle rustlers.  Rangers Brown, Hatcher, & Lowrance all give good accounts of events.

In 1929, Captain Elkins allowed  Frank McCarty to re-write his original book. Elkins was 88 years old.  The 1929 book was titled "Indian Fighting on the Texas Frontier".  This book is rare and expensive. To our knowledge there are no copies of the original book available to the public. This reprint will become priceless as well as a collectors item. The book provides an explanation of the Frontier Texas Ranger's organization and early history of pioneer life on the Texas Frontier.  This book is a must for those interested in old west history!
